My Story

From my first days as an undergraduate at Norfolk State University to now serving as a dual-certified nurse practitioner, my career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to excellence, lifelong learning, and compassionate care for diverse patient populations. With more than fifteen years of experience providing and coordinating health services, I exemplify dedication within advanced practice nursing.

My early years as a registered nurse were spent at the Naval Hospital, an experience that profoundly shaped both my clinical expertise and personal resolve. Working in this unique setting, I had the privilege of caring for active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, fostering a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who serve and their loved ones.

Through rotations across multiple departments, I developed a broad and adaptable clinical skill set. In general surgery, I focused on perioperative care, post-surgical monitoring, and patient education, cultivating meticulous attention to detail. In orthopedics, I coordinated rehabilitation plans, managed pain control, and supported patients recovering from complex injuries. My experience in internal medicine and oncology strengthened my ability to manage chronic illnesses, coordinate multidisciplinary care, and support patients and families throughout long-term treatment journeys.

Throughout these years, I earned the respect of physicians, colleagues, and patients alike for my attentive care, professionalism, and calm presence—even in the most demanding clinical environments.

As my clinical experience deepened, so did my desire to expand my scope of practice and lead in new ways. This ambition led me to Walden University, an institution recognized for its commitment to social change and advanced clinical training. There, I completed the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, gaining mastery in advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnostic reasoning.

After earning certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I found great fulfillment in providing accessible preventive and acute care, particularly to underserved populations facing barriers to healthcare. This advanced role expanded my responsibilities to include leadership within interdisciplinary teams, patient advocacy, and mentorship of fellow nursing professionals.

Recognizing the growing mental health needs across communities and the importance of integrated behavioral healthcare, I returned to Walden University to pursue certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). This training provided in-depth expertise in psychiatric assessment, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions across the lifespan.

My dual certification as both an FNP and PMHNP reflects a commitment to treating the whole person—mind and body. This integrated approach allows me to bridge gaps between physical and mental healthcare, reduce stigma, and advocate for comprehensive wellness. My journey—from undergraduate studies at Norfolk State University to advanced certification at Walden University, and from bedside nursing at the Naval Hospital to advanced clinical practice—stands as a testament to the impact dedicated nurses can make on their patients, their communities, and the profession of nursing.
